The Northern Arizona Cross Country Camp is the premier high school running camp in the country, providing a world-class camp experience in the famed running mecca of Flagstaff, Arizona.

The 2021 camp is a unique opportunity for high school athletes (grades 9-12) to experience training alongside the 3-time (2016-2018) NCAA Division I Cross Country National Champions, and to learn from the professional and Olympic runners who call our mountain town home as well. Our program is designed for young runners to thrive in a camp environment based on specialized training, continued running education, and the individualized guidance necessary to produce not only successful athletes, but successful people.

DATES: July 7 – 11, 2021

For five incredible days, you will be immersed in a training environment unlike any other: endless world-class trails and forest service roads, a dedicated coaching staff with experience at every level of performance, and guest speakers with World and Olympic titles to their name, all the while surrounded by Northern Arizona’s renowned athletes, team culture, and altitude!

Campers will run with and learn from Northern Arizona University coaches and athletes, rub elbows with some of the most famous runners in the country and, in the process, become a part of the legacy of the most famous altitude-based training site anywhere on the planet.

CAMP COACHES

Mike Smith

Camp Director

Michael Smith is entering his fourth full year as the Director of Cross Country and Track & Field after joining the NAU staff in 2016 (after which the team won its first national cross country championship). After taking control of the NAU Track & Field program completely in the Fall of 2017, Smith helped the men’s cross country team to its second-consecutive NCAA National Championship. Both his men’s and women’s teams swept the Big Sky Championships as well.

In 2018 Smith was named the 2018 Big Sky Men’s Coach of the Year. He was also honored with the Bill Delinger Award after his team won the 2018 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships for the third straight year. The men’s indoor team won the Big Sky Conference for a record eighth-straight year. Smith was awarded the Indoor Coach of the Year on the men’s side again. Smith coached the NCAA Indoor National Champion in the men’s mile run, Geordie Beamish.

A groundbreaking, award-winning and thinking-outside-the-box kind of coach, Smith has indisputably become one of the greatest and most sought-after running coaches in the country.

Becca Pflugrad

Assistant Coach

Becca Pflugrad begins her 4th season as an assistant coach with Northern Arizona University Track and Field and Cross Country programs, with a focus on men’s and women’s mid-distance and distance athletes as well as team operations.

She has helped assist the NAU track & field teams to three Big Sky Titles (Men’s Indoor and Women’s Indoor and Outdoor) in her first year with the program in 2016 and followed it up by assisting in coaching the men’s cross country national championship winning team in 2017 and 2018. Pflugrad works primarily with the distance and mid-distance runners and saw three outdoor and five indoor athletes win all-conference honors in her first year with the program in distance events.

A former Division I All-American for Georgetown University, Pflugrad brings to the Lumberjacks a wide variety of experience within both collegiate athletics and the sports industry (as former Athlete Services Coordinator at HYPO2).
